According to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, an astounding 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable by adopting healthy behaviours. With these changes, you can delay the onset of heart disease or stroke by 14 years! In honour of February being Heart Health Awareness month, look for recipes that have high amounts of omega 3, fibre, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidant-rich ingredients. All important components of heart health protection.

This month, we are featuring the health benefits of farro. Farro is an ancient grain that is most common in the Italian diet. It has a chewy, nutty texture that is high in cholesterol-reducing fibre (8 grams per serving) and rich in magnesium, a blood pressure-lowering mineral that is often deficient in the Standard North American (SAD) diet.

Farro takes a bit of time to cook, which isn't surprising as whole grains that are not processed do take time. But, we promise you, it is worth the effort. Cook extra farro ahead of time and make multiple meals out of your single cooking time. Simply store the extra Farro in the refrigerator and add to your meals throughout the week.

Our feature recipe this month is using a breakfast recipe. Click this link for the recipe: Warm Farro Breakfast Bowls.
